NBP’s scientists and members have happily explored Central and South America over the last forty years. In many respects the expeditions to many places like Parque Nacional Manuel Antonio in Costa Rica, soon after its establishment, eventually led to our formal conservation efforts. We were literally the only people who witnessed the milky white, paradise-like beaches and colorful toucans on our first memorable days there. Then you had to wait for low tide or scamper into a small boat to enter the park. Today hundreds of thousands of bathers visit this relatively small park annually and the once pristine waters have lost their surface tension to a constant slick of suntan lotion.

Threats like being loved to death of course are humbled by logging in upper watersheds, palm oil plantations, urban sprawl, pesticides, amphibian-killing fungus and draining of wetlands. Habitat destruction and local extirpation has arrived in exotic areas once thought safe.

These complex ecosystems are understudied, under-protected, unappreciated and underutilized. National Biodiversity Parks is dedicated to developing more sustainable business investment instruments and services for these spectacular areas that boast the most biodiverse ecosystems, parks and important natural assets in the world.

Studying Africa, with its incredibly efficient grassland habitats is a testament to the productivity of truly sustainable, native ecosystems. These savannahs produce a herbivore biomass that is often 50% greater than what cattle ranches generate in the same region.

These inherent ecological efficiencies are a prerequisite to the possibilities of societies developing more sustainable economic models for open spaces. Of course designing projects on paper and having them produce results in the field requires dedicated work and patience. Sustainable initiatives and enthusiastic individuals are needed in communities adjacent to the numerous biomes of Africa.
